Dr Apr biologist Thomas Maenhout

Thomas received his education at the University of Ghent. After obtaining the master's degree in pharmacy in 2009, he completed the 5 years of specialisation in the different fields of clinical biology in the laboratories of Ghent University Hospital, AZ Maria Middelares and AZ Delta Roeselare Menen.

During this period, he focused in particular on haematology and clinical chemistry and also has extensive knowledge of medical microbiology. Besides specialising as a clinical biologist, he also completed a PhD in medical sciences at Ghent University on the subject of ‘biochemical markers for chronic alcohol consumption’.

Innovation and efficiency are two key words in his vision of laboratory medicine and he tries to translate this every day into the operation of Labo Maenhout

Patrick Maenhout

Apr biologist Patrick Maenhout

Patrick Maenhout studied to be a pharmacist at the then State University of Ghent, after which he specialised in clinical biology at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. After working for several years as a hospital pharmacist/clinical biologist at the Heilig Hart Hospital Oudenaarde, he founded Clinical Laboratory Maenhout in Waregem in 1979.

Since then, he built up immense experience in laboratory medicine and for years he intuitively responded to the needs of our healthcare sector. Standing still is going backwards is his motto and that has led to the high-tech and innovative company that Labo Maenhout is today.

Maaike Godefroid

Apr biologist Maaike Godefroid

Maaike trained at Ghent University, where she obtained her master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2010. She then completed her specialisation in clinical biology in the laboratories of UZ Gent, ASZ Aalst and AZ Sint-Jan Brugge.

During her training, she gained experience in the three sub-domains of clinical biology, leading to a broad knowledge of clinical chemistry, haematology and microbiology. At ASZ Aalst, she also came into contact with services to GPs for the first time.

She considers smooth communication and striving for quality to be of paramount importance and important for good daily operations and service at Labo Maenhout.

Yolien 150 150

Apr Biologist Yolien Van der Beken

Yolien started her Pharmaceutical Sciences studies in 2007 at UGent. She successfully completed these studies in 2012 and that same year participated in the selection tests of Defence. After completing a 4-month ‘military initiative phase’, she worked for about two years in the military pharmacy in Nivelles. Afterwards, she reported to the Ministry of Defence to start studies in clinical biology. She insisted on a broad general education and found that all the sub-disciplines of Clinical Biology appealed to her with a slight preference for microbiology. Through a very close collaboration with infectiologist colleagues (UZ Jette), she developed excellent clinical knowledge on top of the lab-technical aspects she acquired during her internships in various laboratories.

Besides several years of internship in Jette, she also gained a lot of experience in the highly advanced automated lab of the Sint-Pieters hospital of LHUB-ULB. An internship year at the ITG (Institute of Tropical Medicine), only possible for military ASOs, taught her the knowledge of various tropical diseases and their diagnostics. During her internship years, Yolien also specialised in medical mycology through courses at the UZ Leuven under the guidance of Prof Katrien Lagrou and completed the MaNaMa Hospital Hygiene.

Yolien works half-time at Labo Maenhout and half-time at the Koningin Astrid Military Hospital in Neder-over-Heembeek. Yolien brings a lot of expertise in microbiology and infectiology to the laboratory.

Jan 150 150

Prof. Jan Philippé

Jan Philippé has been working as a clinical biologist at Labo Maenhout since September 2021. After a long career at Ghent University, he made the switch to our laboratory, where his expertise and knowledge have provided enormous added value ever since (even though Jan has actually reached retirement age).

Jan Philippé initially studied medicine at the University of Antwerp. He then undertook additional training at the Institute of Tropical Medicine. After six months of surgical training with Dr Goedhuys in Sint-Niklaas, he went to what was then Zaire. There he worked for two years in a groin hospital. More than 1,000 inguinal hernias and 100 caesarean sections later, he realised that a well-functioning lab is an essential foundation of efficient medicine.

From the heart of Africa, Jan therefore applied for a training position in clinical biology at Ghent University. He was able to start the five-year course there and would remain there for the rest of his career as a clinical biologist and professor. Haematology was always his favourite field there.

Over the years, Jan also supervised numerous assistants at UGent, including Thomas Maenhout and Maaike Godefroid. Today they are both colleagues at Labo Maenhout, where, based on his experience and in consultation with the doctors, he helps raise patient care in and around Waregem to a higher level (usually on Thursdays and Fridays). Haematology remains ‘his thing’ in this, but Jan immerses himself just as much in all other laboratory aspects.

Joris delanghe 150 150

Prof. Joris Delanghe

Prof Joris Delanghe studied medicine at Ghent University and specialised in clinical chemistry (Bruges, Leuven, Ghent, Stuttgart). He is the author of more than 600 scientific publications and supervisor of 30 PhD students (including Dr Thomas Maenhout) . Since 1994, he has been professor of clinical chemistry at Ghent University. He has been a visiting professor in Lithuania, China, Congo, Rwanda and South Africa. He is editor-in-chief of Clinica Chimica Acta (the official journal of the International Federation of clinical chemistry).

Since 1 October 2022, he is emeritus and active at Labo Maenhout. His deliberate choice of Labo Maenhout is clear given that Labo Maenhout is more than a pure supplier of routine laboratory data. Introducing new diagnostic techniques, developing new blood collection techniques and assisting doctors in interpreting laboratory data take clinical biology to the ‘next level’. A particular interest in the scientific elaboration of locally occurring genetically determined pathology in East and West Flanders contributes to the anchoring of Labo Maenhout in the healthcare sector of the region.

Janvanelslande 150 150

Dr. Biologist Jan Van Elslande

Jan was born and raised in our region and is the son of two general practitioners.

Jan trained as a doctor at KU Leuven, then specialised in clinical biology. He did internships in the middle of the corona pandemic at KUL, where he did special work on SARS-CoV-2 serological assays. Jan did peripheral internships at AZ St-Lucas Ghent and AZ Delta Roeselare.

As a clinical biologist, Jan has broad expertise, but his main interests are in clinical chemistry, infectious serology and informatics. Jan has a particular interest in data analysis, which will become more and more important in the laboratory in the future.
